Intro by Gene Johns
There is no question about the type of music Mario Flores performs; he is 100% real country music. It won’t take you long to figure that out when you listen to this week’s Essie Country’s 21st Century Real Country Music Song of the Week, “What Took You So Long,” by Mario.
Mario is another example of the tremendous real country music talent in the “New Nashville” of country music, Texas. He joins a growing list of talented Texans featured in Essie Country’s Song of the Week series.
This talented traditional country artist is from Helotes, Texas, on the far northwestern edge of San Antonio. In 2007, Mario formed his band and began playing across Texas. He named it the “Soda Creek Band.” What a great name for a country band.
“What Took You So Long” is a perfect example of the kind of songs missing from today’s fake country music radio playlist. However, I must point out one problem I have with the song. Forgive me for being nitpicky, but this song, as good as it is, begs the question, “What?”
The song is about how his girl came along and saved him from a loveless life by bringing love into it. When she gives him what he was looking for, he then asks, “Baby, what took you so long?” What? Let’s be honest. That is so ungrateful!
I didn’t hear a slap in the song, but you know it’s there somewhere. I must admit that a pretentious attitude led to the creation of a genuine country song and performance worthy of selection for Essie Country’s Song of the Week series. Thank you, young lady, for taking so long.
By now, you’re probably wondering what’s taking me so long to get to the song? Well, good point. So, without further ado, here is the link to:
