This edition of Essie Country Reflections highlights the success of a well-crafted country song and the impeccable vocal performance of a talented and rising country music artist. 

 

Zach Top proves why he is one of the best country music artists alive today. Zach gives a superb performance of “Nobody in His Right Mind,” with just his guitar, in an outdoor setting. It’s a brilliant performance that nobody in their right “country state” of mind can deny. 

 

Singer/songwriter Dean Dillon wrote a masterpiece, a heart-wrenching song of regret, “Nobody in His Right Mind,” in 1980. In that same year, he recorded his rendition of that song, and it peaked at number 25 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles Chart.

 

Country legend George Strait released “Nobody in His Right Mind” off his seventh album in April 1986. It quickly reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles Chart, after debuting at number 46. Strait’s rendition was certified “Gold” by the Recording Industry Association of America. 

 

Seldom, if ever, is a cover of a George Strait song by another artist better than a George Strait performance. Zach Top’s rendition of George Strait’s “Nobody in His Right Mind” is just that, better than Strait’s version. 


Sorry, George, you are the King of Country Music, but Zach rises to the challenge and overthrows your reign as the czar of this song. Zach’s brilliant performance of this song, with his wonderfully pure tenor voice and enchanting guitar playing, is worthy of a Grammy.

 

Nobody in their right mind would pass up this opportunity to listen to an amazing, heartfelt performance by Zach Top, which, in my seasoned real country music opinion, is one of the best vocal performances in country music history.
